A New Beginning
When we founded Girlyfight in January of 2010, we had a very broad focus. I think our basic mission may have involved being female and being frustrated at the amount of pain and negativity in the world. We wanted to do something to fix it. All of it. That’s probably not a bad focus, but perhaps a bit unrealistic.
We played at that for a year before realizing we needed to narrow things down a bit. Our idea of simplifying still included saving the world, only this time by gathering a bunch of women and doing small things. We’re not changing direction because we believe that was time and effort misspent but because we’ve realized that it’s a very large undertaking that we don’t feel quite qualified to pull off just yet.
And so we are introducing an even narrower focus with this new direction and we’re very excited about it! From now on, instead of saving the world, Girlyfight will focus on saving ourselves. Specifically, we are going to explore the creative yearnings that so many women feel and do not follow.
What’s the same?
Girlyfight will still be about connecting women and supporting each other. We will still share resources and inspiration and great people and organizations. Further down the agenda, we hope to find a way to use our creativity to make a difference in our communities (see, we haven’t given up on saving the world!).
What’s changed?
Part of the reason we chose this new purpose for the site is that it’s something Brigitte and I have both struggled with ourselves. And when we examined some of the reasons that we were struggling with the world-changing mission of the site, we both felt that it was hard to feel qualified to change the world when you aren’t first changing your own life. Because we felt uncertain in our abilities, it was a constant fight to keep content flowing and enthusiasm high for Girlyfight.
Mission: Girlyfight aims to inspire, connect and support women who wish to overcome distractions and obstacles in order to explore and reconnect with their creative dreams in a meaningful way.
With our new mission, we will be approaching this creativity expedition from a very personal level. We’re going to tackle our own imaginations and seek out our own muses. There will be sharing, exercises, and brainstorming. As we share our own journey towards action with you, we hope that you will be inclined to join us.
This week is about reintroducing Girlyfight (and your hosts) and explaining where we want to go. Starting next week, we’ll begin our adventure – and you’ll have a front row seat!
