Prompt: Joy
Our weekly prompts are exercises in dreaming and doing. Some will feature specific questions, others will include just a word or phrase. Respond any way you like - whatever the prompt below inspires in you, go with it. Whether you respond with a written response (poetry, an essay, a bit of fiction) or a visual response (photo, paint, video, art), we’d love for you to share your responses with us by leaving a comment or link below.
This week's prompt:
You’ve just met a being from another planet. How do you explain the concept of “joy” to him?

Joy is subjective. Everyone feels this feeling of euphoric happiness in different ways. For me? Joy is spending time with people I love. Joking with friends that know me well enough to know what makes me laugh. Reading a good book. A fantastic meal – preferably a home cooked one. Chocolate. BIG hugs. Making other people feel loved and special. Writing words that matter. Love. Observing and appreciating beautiful things – art, words, photos, people. These things make me swell with happiness to the point where I almost want to burst. Now, THAT’S joy.
This one has been tough for me! I’ve been having a tough time finding a whole lot of joy lately but let me do my best to explain it to my little green friend.
Joy is a happiness that bubbles up from deep within you. Each person has their own triggers but the feeling itself is an overwhelming sense of delight. Joy causes the uncontrollable beaming smiles that make your cheeks hurt but you don’t care and you wouldn’t stop if you could. Also, joy is best shared with others.
