Prompt: Ideal Day
Our weekly prompts are exercises in dreaming and doing. Some will feature specific questions, others will include just a word or phrase. Respond any way you like - whatever the prompt below inspires in you, go with it. Whether you respond with a written response (poetry, an essay, a bit of fiction) or a visual response (photo, paint, video, art), we’d love for you to share your responses with us by leaving a comment or link below.
This week's prompt:
Pretend you have the day off from all obligations. The only thing on your to do list is to spend the time on those creative pursuits you always want to enjoy but can’t for whatever reason. That reason doesn’t exist today, so what will you do?
Bonus points: join us starting next Monday for the first week of “Creatives in Training” and we’ll share some ideas for creating the space in your life that you need to make some of these things happen.

I love this prompt! Let’s see – if I didn’t let my ability to over think every little thing that happens in a given day, I would have a lot more time to pursue the things I want to be doing. My ideal day would involve exercise of some sort – I’d love for it to be a yoga class, but I’d take an hour of steady walking/exploring. I would love to be able to spend a few hours writing, reading for the sake of learning, and doing one new thing. In the evening, I’d love the chance to cook dinner and maybe even experiment with some of my own recipe ideas. I’d end the day with something chill and inspiring like a movie or some leisure reading and a cup of hot tea. Ah, that would be amazing.
I would bust into the craft closet and finish one of my 340598345 unfinished projects. Last year I made it a goal to finish projects rather than start a million new ones. I can’t say it was entirely successful, but I did get some things done (i.e. the top of a quilt I started when I was 14). Ever since my crafting buddy moved to New York, I just haven’t been as inspired!
Great plans, Erin! I just recycled/scavenged-for-parts a latch-hook rug that I started at least 20 years ago. Even if I finished it, it would never be my taste or that of anyone I know. So I ditched most of it and just saved the pieces of yarn, thinking maybe I can use those for something else. Unfinished projects make me a bit batty!
Even though I don’t work a traditional 8-5, I still find I push off most of my creative projects in order to do chores, freelancing, errands, etc. So I would start with some reading over my cup of coffee. Then a few hours of writing. In the afternoon, I might spend some time playing the piano. After dinner, some crafting, probably of cards or gifts to brighten the day of some friends.
On my day without obligations, I’d make a mess! (see linked post below)
